Episode 0322 minThe Zone of Silence: The Mystery That Wouldn't Hold StillIn 1989, more than 650 people drove down a brutal dirt road into the emptiest corner of northern Mexico, all searching for the same place. The researchers who lived there couldn't tell them where it was — because the answer kept changing. This episode traces the Zone of Silence back to its origins: a phrase coined by a newspaper reporter in March 1970 to describe nothing more than the sound of an empty desert; an engineer's radio that went dead in spots that moved; and, four months later, a U.S. Air Force rocket that fell out of the sky and landed in the Mapimí basin, triggering a secret recovery operation by unmarked train. Along the way: a meteorite older than the Earth, a tortoise found nowhere else on the planet, lights on the horizon that residents call strange "but nothing," and a mystery that migrated across the map every time someone tried to pin it down. Episode 0418 minThe Girl Who Faced Six Demons and 67 Exorcisms: Anneliese MichelIn a darkened bedroom in 1970s West Germany, two priests repeatedly performed the Catholic rite of exorcism over a young woman named Anneliese Michel. More than forty recordings reportedly preserve the prayers, screams, and disturbing voices heard during 67 sessions. This episode traces Anneliese’s story from her first seizures and terrifying visions to her family’s belief that she was possessed by six demons. It examines the Church’s involvement, the medical treatment she received, her death from malnutrition and dehydration, and the negligent-homicide trial that followed. Was this evidence of something supernatural—or a devastating case in which illness, faith, and fear became impossible to separate?
